Fighter planes used to circle here, today sea eagles. Known as the “Bombodrom”, the Kyritz-Ruppiner Heide was used as a military training area in the past. In the meantime, the Heinz Sielmann Foundation has cleared the southern section of the heath and created the first hiking trail over the former military training area, which is safe to walk on. A hike to the heather bloom in August and September isr ecommended. A tour of discovery through the heather at this time feels like a bath in a honey pot. Accompanied by the hum of the bees, a purple colored sea of flowers awaits as far as the eye can see. From the observation tower, the view extends over one of the largest contiguous Calluna heath areas in Europe, which offers a habitat for numerous rare and endangered animal and plant species.
