The idyllic village of Rühstädt is home to more than 30 pairs of storks that nest on the house and barn roofs. The people of Rühstadt built them nesting aids and ever since the 1950s more and more storks have been coming to the village, building nests and raising their young. The landmark of Rühstadt is the restored water tower in the castle park, where storks have been breeding since 1952. A careful record is kept of the arrivals, number of youngs and departures to the winter quarters in late summer. Visitors can read the numbers on boards at the nest locations.
